How to prepare for your DOT physical

Feel free to fill out the necessary paperwork at home before your exam. This may include our clinic forms and the driver’s portion of the exam. You will receive these documents upon booking your physical.

We suggest that you bring any of the following that apply to you:

  • A list of any medications you are on and the dosage

  • A list of any doctors you work with- name, phone, address

  • If diabetic, your blood sugar reading

  • If you have sleep apnea, a record from your CPAP machine over the last 90 days

  • Your glasses or contacts

  • Your hearing aids

  • If you have heart issues, a letter from your cardiologist saying you’re safe to drive and results of any recent heart-related tests

  • If you’ve lost the use of an arm or leg, a letter from your doctor saying you’re safe to drive

  • If you take medications that cause sleepiness or are considered a controlled substance, a letter from your doctor saying you’re safe to drive

  • If you’ve had a stroke, brain tumor, suffer from seizures, or bleeding in the brain, a letter from your doctor saying you’re safe to drive

Conditions that may disqualify you from a DOT card include:

  • Unstable heart condition

  • Seizure disorders

  • Epilepsy

  • Inner ear disorder

  • Diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • Vision impairment

  • Hearing impairment

  • Marijuana use

  • Illegal substance abuse

  • Respiratory conditions

The severity of these conditions varies, so it’s important to work with an experienced FMCSA Certified Medical Examiner to ensure your safety and eligibility.

Ways to help you pass your DOT physical:

  • Make healthy choices starting now- eat well, get exercise, drink water, get enough sleep

  • Take your prescribed medications and adhere to your doctor’s advice

  • Be honest when answering your examiner’s questions

  • Bring all necessary paperwork to your exam

If you’re not healthy or could jeopardize your life and the lives of others, commercial driving is not a wise choice for you. We want to help you succeed, so allow us the opportunity to work with you, and let’s see how we can improve your health
